The Gravestone of Laurence Matheson

“Asleep” is the marble gravestone of Laurence Matheson (1930-1987), sculpted at the request of his widow by artist Peter Shipperheyn.

The grave of Laurence Matheson is located in the Mount Macedon Cemetery of Victoria, Australia.

    There is something so lonely, yet so serene and peaceful about this nude sculpture. Such a powerful aura of wistful, nostalgia and the awareness of the utter solitude of death. The woman’s posture on the tombstone evokes such sad, perplexing thoughts I find difficult to put into words. Surely the loss of a precious love. I’ve never seen anything like this before. Utterly brilliant.
